What it does

Goals is an agent skill from codewhale-hq/Codewhale. Set, review, and update the user's goals. Use when: goals, resolutions, track progress, what am I working toward, or holding me accountable.

Its SKILL.md is about 270 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: Open-source Rust agent engine and terminal client for Codewhale, with provider choice, tools, approvals and receipts. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

Example prompts

  • “/goals”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Read the current file before discussing goals; quote, don't paraphrase,
  2. Setting: one goal per line with a measurable target and a date. Confirm
  3. Review: compare stated goals against what the user reports; update status
  4. Nudge, don't nag: progress check-ins only when the user asks or scheduled.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 8d2fb45. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Goals loads about 273 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 37 tokens; SKILL.md has 139 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~37
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~273

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Goals

When to use

Recording what the user is working toward, reviewing progress, and updating goals as life changes.

Setup

Goals live in $CODEWHALE_HOME/goals.md, one file the user owns. Create it on first use; fail loud when the home directory is not writable.

Workflow

  1. Read the current file before discussing goals; quote, don't paraphrase, when reporting status.
  2. Setting: one goal per line with a measurable target and a date. Confirm the wording with the user before writing.
  3. Review: compare stated goals against what the user reports; update status lines, never rewrite history — append dated entries.
  4. Nudge, don't nag: progress check-ins only when the user asks or scheduled.

Non-goals

  • Do not silently rewrite or delete goals.
  • Do not invent goals the user never stated.
  • Do not mix goals with task tracking — goals are outcomes, not todos.
