What it does

Flights is an agent skill from codewhale-hq/Codewhale. Track flights and look up status and schedules. Use when: flight status, track a flight, flightaware, arrivals, departures, delays, or a flight number.

Its SKILL.md is about 260 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: Open-source Rust agent engine and terminal client for Codewhale, with provider choice, tools, approvals and receipts. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • A flight number

Example prompts

  • “/flights”

Requirements

  • A credential in FLIGHTAWARE_API_KEY

Workflow steps

2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 8d2fb45. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • curl

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • aeroapi.flightaware.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • FLIGHTAWARE_API_KEY

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Flights loads about 258 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 40 tokens; SKILL.md has 112 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~40
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~258

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Flights

When to use

Live status, schedules, gates, and delays for a flight the user names.

Setup

Two paths:

  1. Web (no setup). Flight number + date via web search; good enough for status, terminals, and delays.
  2. FlightAware AeroAPI (structured data). Needs the user's API key, or fail loud: curl -H "x-apikey: $FLIGHTAWARE_API_KEY" https://aeroapi.flightaware.com/aeroapi/flights/{ident}

Workflow

  1. Confirm the flight identifier and date — never guess between same-number daily flights.
  2. Report status, scheduled vs actual times, origin/destination, and terminal/gate.
  3. State the timezone of every time quoted.

Non-goals

  • Do not book, change, or cancel travel.
  • Do not look up other people's itineraries from a name alone.
  • Do not quote times without their timezone.
