What it does

Atmos Custom Commands is an agent skill from cloudposse/atmos. Custom CLI commands: command definition in atmos.yaml, arguments, flags, shared native step types, when: conditions, output/UI steps, env vars, custom component types

Its SKILL.md is about 1.2k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including reference files (for example `references/command-syntax.md`).

It sits in DevOps & Cloud. The repository describes itself as: Atmos is the open-source runtime for infrastructure — it builds, authenticates, and ships Terraform, OpenTofu, Packer, Ansible, Kubernetes, Helm, and containers the same way on… The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • DevOps & Cloud work in your project

Example prompts

  • “/atmos-custom-commands”

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Inspect existing commands in atmos.yaml and imported config before adding a new command.
  2. Prefer native typed steps over large shell blocks.
  3. Add flags and arguments with clear names and defaults.
  4. Use dependencies.tools for tools the command needs in its execution context.
  5. Use identity when the command needs Atmos Auth credentials.
  6. Verify with atmos --help and a dry-run or read-only invocation when possible.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit fbae93f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are yaml and bash).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Atmos Custom Commands loads about 1.2k tokens when it runs, and up to ~4.8k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 47 tokens; SKILL.md has 363 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~47
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.2k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~4.8k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Atmos Custom Commands

Use this skill when users define or modify project-specific Atmos CLI commands in the top-level commands section of atmos.yaml.

Custom commands replace scattered scripts with discoverable CLI commands that can use arguments, flags, environment variables, authentication identities, tool dependencies, component config, nested subcommands, and typed execution steps.

When a task is mainly about steps, step type, working_directory, step env, output, scripts, workdirs, or hook-compatible step payloads, also load atmos-steps.

Quick Shape

yaml
commands:
  - name: hello
    description: Say hello
    arguments:
      - name: name
        default: World
    steps:
      - type: say
        text: "Hello {{ .Arguments.name }}"
shell
atmos hello
atmos hello Erik

For full field syntax, read references/command-syntax.md.

Agent Workflow

  6. Verify with atmos <command> --help and a dry-run or read-only invocation when possible.

Native Step Preference

Default to structured steps before shell:

NeedPrefer
Run an Atmos commandtype: atmos
Operator messagessay, toast, markdown, table, pager
Data shapingformat, join, filter, write
Status/progressspin, stage, log, linebreak
Concurrencyparallel, matrix, wait, wait-all
Containers/emulatorscontainer, emulator
HTTP callshttp
Preconditionsrequire / assert
External command glueshell / exec

Shell is still appropriate for short glue commands, terminal-native tools, checked-in scripts, or commands that genuinely need shell semantics.

Common Patterns

Flags and Arguments
yaml
commands:
  - name: deploy-one
    arguments:
      - name: component
        required: true
    flags:
      - name: stack
        shorthand: s
        required: true
    steps:
      - type: atmos
        command: terraform deploy {{ .Arguments.component }} -s {{ .Flags.stack }}
Tool Dependencies
yaml
commands:
  - name: scan
    dependencies:
      tools:
        checkov: "latest"
    steps:
      - type: shell
        command: checkov --directory .
Authentication
yaml
commands:
  - name: prod-whoami
    dependencies:
      tools:
        aws-cli: "^2.0.0"
    identity: prod-readonly
    steps:
      - type: shell
        command: aws sts get-caller-identity
Custom Component Types

Use component_config when a custom command should resolve a component and stack before running:

yaml
commands:
  - name: render-app
    arguments:
      - name: component
        required: true
    flags:
      - name: stack
        shorthand: s
        required: true
    component_config:
      component: "{{ .Arguments.component }}"
      stack: "{{ .Flags.stack }}"
    steps:
      - type: shell
        command: ./scripts/render-app.sh

Guardrails

  • Do not override built-in commands unless the user explicitly wants that behavior.
  • Do not hide complex business logic inside inline YAML shell blocks. Move it to a checked-in script or use native step types.
  • Do not use custom commands for long-lived reusable orchestration when an Atmos workflow is a better fit.
  • Keep command names stable; they become user-facing CLI API.
