What it does

Atmos Compositions is an agent skill from cloudposse/atmos. Atmos compositions: named service groupings, compositions.<name.services, components.container[].composition, composition validate, and service contract checks

Its SKILL.md is about 490 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in DevOps & Cloud. The repository describes itself as: Atmos is the open-source runtime for infrastructure — it builds, authenticates, and ships Terraform, OpenTofu, Packer, Ansible, Kubernetes, Helm, and containers the same way on… The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • DevOps & Cloud work in your project

Example prompts

  • “Use the atmos-compositions skill to atmo compositions: named service groupings, compositions.<name.services, components.container[].composition…”
  • “/atmos-compositions”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 36726ae. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are yaml and bash).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Atmos Compositions loads about 486 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 45 tokens; SKILL.md has 152 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~45
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~486

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Atmos Compositions

Use this skill for compositions: named groupings of component instances that form a system. Compositions define the service contract; components fulfill services by referencing the composition.

NeedLoad
Container components that fulfill servicesatmos-container
Stack manifest structureatmos-stacks
Workflow orchestration across servicesatmos-workflows

Configuration

Declare composition service contracts at stack scope:

yaml
compositions:
  app:
    description: Application runtime
    services:
      - api
      - worker
      - db

components:
  container:
    api:
      composition: app
    worker:
      composition: app

The composition describes expected services. Components declare which composition they fulfill.

Validation

Use atmos composition validate to inspect whether a stack provides all services for a composition.

bash
atmos composition validate app -s plat-ue2-dev

Validation reports fulfilled and not-provided services. Use this before running workflows that assume a complete multi-service system.

Guidance

  • Use compositions for systems made of multiple stack-scoped services.
  • Keep service names stable and human-readable.
  • Do not use composition names as a replacement for Atmos profiles or ATMOS_PROFILE.
  • Put shared composition definitions in stack mixins/defaults when multiple stacks use the same service contract.
  • Prefer composition validation over hand-written checks in shell steps.
