What it does

Parse CLI is an agent skill from ChrisPappalardo/eparse. Use this skill to extract and list tables from Excel files using the eparse CLI. Call when you need to discover or extract tabular data from one or more Excel files or directories. Supports output to console, SQLite, or PostgreSQL.

Its SKILL.md is about 330 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Documents & Office, covering Excel spreadsheets. It works with Microsoft Excel, PostgreSQL and SQLite. The repository describes itself as: Excel spreadsheet crawler and table parser for data extraction and querying. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Excel spreadsheets

Example prompts

  • “/parse-cli”

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Run the following command, replacing with your file or directory
  2. For output to SQLite (choose your own database file name)
  3. For output to PostgreSQL (requires psycopg2)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 039e552. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are bash).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Parse CLI loads about 326 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 60 tokens; SKILL.md has 107 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~60
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~326

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Parse Excel Files with eparse CLI

When to use

  • To discover, extract, or validate tables in Excel files or directories.
  • For initial data exploration or to prepare data for querying.

How to use

  1. Run the following command, replacing <path_to_files> with your file or directory:
    sh
    eparse -v -f <path_to_files> parse
  2. For output to SQLite (choose your own database file name):
    sh
    mkdir -p .files
    eparse -f <path_to_files> -o sqlite3:///.files/<your_db_file>.db parse -z
    • Replace <your_db_file> with your desired SQLite database file name.
  3. For output to PostgreSQL (requires psycopg2):
    sh
    eparse -f <path_to_files> -o postgres://<user>:<password>@<host>:<port>/<db_name> parse -z
    • Replace <user>, <password>, <host>, <port>, and <db_name> with your PostgreSQL credentials and database name.
  • Use -t to avoid truncation, -l for loose table detection, and --exclude-nested to skip nested tables.
  • See README for more options.
