What it does

Paper Polish is an agent skill from brycewang-stanford/Auto-Empirical-Research-Skills. Proofread and verify academic papers in LaTeX. Runs 19 sequential checks covering titles, consistency, citations, formatting, theoretical tension in motivation, concise results reporting, cross-section repetition, em-dash usage, and auxiliary-text-to-footnote conversion. Trigger when user says "check paper" / "proofread" / "paper-checker" / "校对" / "核查论文".

Its SKILL.md is about 7.3k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 1 other file.

It sits in Documents & Office, covering LaTeX, Copy editing and proofreading and Citation management. It works with LaTeX. The repository describes itself as: 🔬 A curated collection of 23,000+ agent skills for empirical research across 8 social science disciplines. | 精选 23,000+ AI Agent 技能库,覆盖8大社会科学学科的实证研究。CoPaper.AI…

  • Tasks that involve LaTeX
  • Tasks that involve Copy editing and proofreading

Example prompts

  • “check paper”
  • “proofread”
  • “paper-checker”

Requirements

  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Bash, Edit, Write, Glob, Grep, AskUserQuestion, WebSearch, WebFetch

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Present the issue clearly (original vs. proposed change, or finding).
  2. Ask the user: "Accept this change? (yes/no/edit)"
  3. Wait for the user's response before proceeding to the next issue.
  4. If the user says "yes", apply the change using the Edit tool.
  5. If the user says "no", skip and move to the next issue.
  6. If the user says "edit" or provides alternative text, apply the user's version instead.
  7. After all issues in a check are resolved, announce completion and move to the next check.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9fa87d8. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Bash
    • Edit
    • Write
    • Glob
    • Grep
    • AskUserQuestion
    • WebSearch
    • WebFetch

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Paper Polish loads about 7.3k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 93 tokens; SKILL.md has 3,012 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~93
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~7.3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NotePre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: Bash)SKILL.md
allowed-tools: Read, Bash, Edit, Write, Glob, Grep, AskUserQuestion, WebSearch, WebFetch

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 3,012 words (~7,250 tokens).
