What it does

Model Selection is an agent skill from bradygaster/squad. Resolve explicit and persistent model preferences for Squad spawns without pinning stale defaults

Its SKILL.md is about 560 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: Squad: AI agent teams for any project. The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “/model-selection”

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Explicit model requested for the current spawn.
  2. Current-session model directive from the user.
  3. .squad/config.json agentModelOverrides.{specialist-id}.
  4. .squad/config.json defaultModel.
  5. The specialist charter's explicit model requirement.
  6. Runtime automatic selection by omitting the model parameter.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d2364df. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Model Selection loads about 563 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 28 tokens; SKILL.md has 268 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~28
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~563

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Model Selection

Use this skill when the user requests a model, the team configuration contains a saved model preference, or a specialist charter explicitly requires one.

Resolution Order

Apply the first available value:

  1. Explicit model requested for the current spawn.
  2. Current-session model directive from the user.
  3. .squad/config.json agentModelOverrides.{specialist-id}.
  4. .squad/config.json defaultModel.
  5. The specialist charter's explicit model requirement.
  6. Runtime automatic selection by omitting the model parameter.

An explicit current request always overrides older persistent configuration. Do not invent a model preference from task type alone, and do not pin a hardcoded fallback that can become obsolete.

Persistent Preferences

  • Save defaultModel or agentModelOverrides only when the user explicitly asks for persistence.
  • Merge model fields into the existing .squad/config.json; do not replace unrelated settings.
  • Use active specialist IDs from .squad/casting/registry.json.
  • Validate a requested model against the runtime's currently supported model list.
  • To return to automatic routing, remove the applicable override rather than writing an "auto" sentinel unless the runtime schema explicitly supports it.

Spawn Behavior

  • Pass a model only when resolution steps 1-5 produce a supported value.
  • Otherwise omit the model parameter and allow the runtime to select.
  • Preserve the user's requested reasoning effort or context tier only when the runtime supports it.
  • If a requested model is unavailable, report that failure and fall back to runtime automatic selection unless the user supplied a different fallback.

Stop Conditions

  • Stop if the requested model is not supported and no automatic fallback is acceptable.
  • Stop rather than rewriting configuration when .squad/config.json cannot be parsed safely.
  • Do not benchmark models, estimate billing, or modify specialist responsibilities under this skill.

Questions about Model Selection

What does Model Selection do?

Resolve explicit and persistent model preferences for Squad spawns without pinning stale defaults. Model Selection is an agent skill from bradygaster/squad.

How do I install Model Selection in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add bradygaster/squad --skill model-selection -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.squad/skills/model-selection in bradygaster/squad) into .claude/skills/model-selection in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Model Selection in Codex?

Run `npx skills add bradygaster/squad --skill model-selection -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.squad/skills/model-selection in bradygaster/squad) into .agents/skills/model-selection in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Model Selection in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add bradygaster/squad --skill model-selection -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/model-selection, .gemini/skills/model-selection, .github/skills/model-selection and .opencode/skills/model-selection in your project.

What does Model Selection need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Model Selection is instructions for the agent only.

Does Model Selection access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Model Selection safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Model Selection use?

Model Selection is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Model Selection use?

About 563 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.3k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Model Selection?
