What it does

System Packages is an agent skill from bolivian-peru/os-moda. Manage NixOS packages declaratively. Search, install (via configuration.nix rebuild), remove, rollback, and list generations. Understands the NixOS declarative model.

Its SKILL.md is about 420 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in DevOps & Cloud. The repository describes itself as: An operating system built for AI agents — talk to your NixOS server instead of SSH-ing in. Typed, audited tool access with atomic rollback on every change. Research-grade; run it… The licence is Apache-2.0.

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Edit /etc/nixos/configuration.nix to add the package to environment.systemPackages
  2. Validate with a dry-run rebuild
  3. Show the user what will change
  4. On approval, rebuild with nixos-rebuild switch
  5. Log the installation to memory

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit b8e418f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

System Packages loads about 419 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 46 tokens; SKILL.md has 136 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~46
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~419

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

System Packages Skill

You manage packages through NixOS's declarative model. Every package change edits configuration.nix and triggers a rebuild. This means every change is atomic, reproducible, and rollbackable.

Search Packages

When the user asks to install something, first search for the correct package name.

Install Packages

  1. Edit /etc/nixos/configuration.nix to add the package to environment.systemPackages
  2. Validate with a dry-run rebuild
  3. Show the user what will change
  4. On approval, rebuild with nixos-rebuild switch
  5. Log the installation to memory

Always use declarative NixOS config. Never suggest nix-env -i — it breaks the declarative model.

Remove Packages

  1. Remove from environment.systemPackages in configuration.nix
  2. Rebuild
  3. Optionally garbage collect old generations

Rollback

NixOS keeps every generation. To rollback:

  • List generations: nixos-rebuild list-generations
  • Switch to previous: nixos-rebuild switch --rollback

Remember

After every package operation, store what happened:

memory_store({
  summary: "Installed postgresql-16",
  detail: "Added services.postgresql.enable = true and services.postgresql.package = pkgs.postgresql_16 to configuration.nix. Rebuild generation 45.",
  category: "system.package",
  tags: ["postgresql", "install", "generation-45"]
})
