generate-templateA skill your agent uses when the user asks to create a kubectl-status template for one or more Kubernetes resource kinds found in the current kubectl context.
Generate Template is an agent skill from bergerx/kubectl-status. Use when the user asks to create a kubectl-status template for one or more Kubernetes resource kinds found in the current kubectl context.
Its SKILL.md is about 1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in DevOps & Cloud, covering Container orchestration. It works with Kubernetes. The repository describes itself as: A kubectl plugin to print a human-friendly output that focuses on the status fields of the resources in kubernetes. The licence is Apache-2.0.
5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 8883d71. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
kubectljqFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use kubectl, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Generate Template loads about 1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 39 tokens; SKILL.md has 438 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

kubectl get crd <full-crd-name> -o json | jq '.spec.versions[0].schema.openAPIV3Schema.properties'Read spec and status sub-schemas in full — not just top-level keys. For each field, check its description to understand what it means. Use that meaning to decide whether it warrants inclusion, applying the output philosophy in CONVENTIONS.md.
Pay specific attention to:
true/false; emit a meaningful label only when the value is operationally interesting.required lists — note them, but do not treat them as a render-time guarantee. Third-party CRD schemas are looser than their docs, they change between operator versions, and --local/-f renders manifests that never passed API-server validation. See CONVENTIONS.md § Never trust a field to be present — a nil reaching a color function aborts the render of the whole object.kubectl get <resource> -A --no-headers | head -5
kubectl get <resource> <name> -n <ns> -o jsonCross-reference the schema against what is actually populated. Skip status fields that are never set and spec fields always at their default.
File: ~/.kubectl-status/templates/<Kind>.tmpl
Copy the define wrapper and bookend sections from any existing template. The GVK comment ({{- /* GVK: group/version, Kind=<Kind> */ -}}) must follow the gotype comment immediately after define. Section order and what status_summary_line already covers are in CONVENTIONS.md § Section order.
All design rules are in CONVENTIONS.md. Implementation pointers:
selector_with_health_summary from common.tmpl; only hand-roll when custom health logic is needed.HTTPRoute.tmpl has worked examples of both single-ref and list-of-refs forms.with/if guards cover almost everything; don't pre-emptively wrap every field in default. Add it where a guard can't reach: values handed to a shared sub-template, sub-fields of an item inside a range, and anything reaching toString. Let step 5 tell you the rest.kubectl status <resource> <name> -n <ns>Test at least two different instances to confirm optional fields appear and disappear correctly.
Then verify against a partial object, which live instances never exercise:
cat > /tmp/partial.yaml <<'EOF'
apiVersion: <group>/<version>
kind: <Kind>
metadata:
name: bare
namespace: default
creationTimestamp: "2026-06-27T09:12:04Z"
spec: {}
EOF
kubectl status -f /tmp/partial.yaml --local --shallowAdd further documents that drop individual required sub-fields from each list and reference the template renders — e.g. a ref with name but no kind, a list entry with only one of its fields. Any Failed to render: line, or a literal <nil> in the output, is a bug: fix it before finishing, and re-run all three renders.

Generate Template is an agent skill from bergerx/kubectl-status. Use when the user asks to create a kubectl-status template for one or more Kubernetes resource kinds found in the current kubectl context.
Generate Template fits situations like: the user asks to create a kubectl-status template for one; more Kubernetes resource kinds found in the current kubectl context.
Run `npx skills add bergerx/kubectl-status --skill generate-template -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.claude/skills/generate-template in bergerx/kubectl-status) into .claude/skills/generate-template in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add bergerx/kubectl-status --skill generate-template -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.claude/skills/generate-template in bergerx/kubectl-status) into .agents/skills/generate-template in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add bergerx/kubectl-status --skill generate-template -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/generate-template, .gemini/skills/generate-template, .github/skills/generate-template and .opencode/skills/generate-template in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Generate Template needs the command-line tools its instructions call (kubectl and jq).
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Generate Template is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.1k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
