What it does

Ab Analyze Project is an agent skill from ayoubben18/ab-method. Analyze a project's architecture end to end — extract domain language, map the tech stack, document frontend and backend patterns. Use when onboarding a new codebase or refreshing the architecture baseline.

Its SKILL.md is about 370 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Backend development. The repository describes itself as: A workflow system for Claude Code and Codex. It grills a problem into a domain-grounded plan, then either drives it through test-driven missions you review one at a time, or… The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Refreshing the architecture baseline

Example prompts

Requirements

Workflow steps

2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. The project root (the current working directory) first. If /.ab-method/... exists, use it. A project's own .ab-method/structure/index.yaml…
  2. Only if the project has no such file (AB Method installed as a plugin rather than with npx ab-method), read the bundled copy…

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 85946e3. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • npx

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Ab Analyze Project loads about 367 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 56 tokens; SKILL.md has 167 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~56
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~367

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

This skill runs the AB Method analyze-project workflow.

Follow the workflow defined in .ab-method/core/analyze-project.md exactly — it contains the full process, output format, and rules.

Before doing anything, check .ab-method/structure/index.yaml. It defines where this workflow reads from and writes to. Paths are user-configurable; never hardcode them.

Locating .ab-method/. Every .ab-method/... path — here and inside the workflow files — is resolved in this order:

  1. The project root (the current working directory) first. If <project>/.ab-method/... exists, use it. A project's own .ab-method/structure/index.yaml is how it customises its paths, so it always wins — check for it even when the bundled copy is right there.
  2. Only if the project has no such file (AB Method installed as a plugin rather than with npx ab-method), read the bundled copy: ../../../.ab-method/ relative to this SKILL.md.

The bundled copy is read-only reference material. Every path the index or a workflow names (docs/..., CONTEXT.md, UBIQUITOUS_LANGUAGE.md, ...) is relative to the project root — never to the folder the bundled files live in. Never write inside that folder.
