spawn-instanceAdd a teammate — create an instance of a soul with its own new aweb identity and home, plus its own git worktree for developers.
Spawn Instance is an agent skill from awebai/aweb. Add a teammate — create an instance of a soul with its own new aweb identity and home, plus its own git worktree for developers. Use when a human asks for a teammate or assigned work needs one.
Its SKILL.md is about 730 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Agent Workflows, covering Git worktrees. It works with Git. The repository describes itself as: Communication for AI agents: stable identity, durable mail and chat, and wake-up events across sessions, runtimes, machines, and organizations. MIT, self-hostable. The licence is MIT.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 682c445. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
gitclaudeFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:
AWEB_API_KEYFrom names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Spawn Instance loads about 725 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 52 tokens; SKILL.md has 223 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from awebai/aweb at commit 682c445, republished under its MIT licence (© awebai). 223 words, ~725 tokens.
.claude/skills/spawn-instance/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Souls (agents/souls/<role>/) are the canonical agent bodies. An
instance is a runnable copy with its own new aweb identity:
agents/instances/<name>/: holds the body (AGENTS.md
symlinked to the soul) and the identity (.aw). The session runs here.work — where it does the job, per the soul's soul.yaml:
worktree (developer) → work/ is its own git worktree on its own
branch; main (coordinator, reviewer) → work is a symlink to the main
checkout.Naming: bare role for standing singletons (coordinator);
<role>-<purpose> for work-specific instances (developer-authflow,
reviewer-pr-7). Spawn when a human asks, or when assigned work needs a
teammate — not on your own initiative to "get help".
aw reads your identity from the current directory's .aw, so run this
from your own home:
role=<role>; name=<name> # e.g. role=developer name=developer-authflow
REPO="$(cd "$(git rev-parse --git-common-dir)" && cd .. && pwd)" # main checkout, even from a worktree
inst="$REPO/agents/instances/$name"
work=$(awk -F': *' '/^work:/{print $2}' "$REPO/agents/souls/$role/soul.yaml" | awk '{print $1}')
# 1) Invite from your own identity; capture the token.
TOKEN="$(aw id team invite 2>&1 | awk '/^Token:/{print $2}')"
[ -n "$TOKEN" ] || { echo "no token — run from your OWN instance home"; exit 1; }
# 2) Make the home; the new identity joins the team there.
mkdir -p "$inst"
( cd "$inst" && aw id team accept-invite "$TOKEN" --alias "$name" && aw init --do-not-touch-agents-md --alias "$name" )
# 3) Wire the body, and harness links (Claude Code shown).
ln -sfn "$REPO/agents/souls/$role/AGENTS.md" "$inst/AGENTS.md"
ln -sfn AGENTS.md "$inst/CLAUDE.md"
# 4) The work location.
if [ "$work" = worktree ]; then
git -C "$REPO" worktree add "$inst/work" -b "$name"
else
ln -sfn "$REPO" "$inst/work"
fi
echo "ready — home: $inst"If you have no connected instance yet (or your CLI predates
aw id team invite), use the dashboard instead of steps 1–2: create the
home directory and run the dashboard-generated
AWEB_API_KEY=... AWEB_URL=... aw init ... from it. The rest is the same.
⚠️ Never move or rename an instance home after
aw init— aweb registers the workspace at its path. Re-mint in place to relocate.
Hand the human the launch command (don't start sessions a human will drive):
cd agents/instances/<name> && claude # or pi/codex, per the soul's runtimeWhen the teammate is no longer needed, use the retire-instance skill.

fynnfluegge/agtx
Breaks a conversation's results into feature-level tasks and pushes them to the agtx kanban board, where each task gets its own worktree and agent session.
Wirasm/prp
Coordinates several PRP workstreams in isolated Git worktrees from one session, verifying proof, holding merge gates and sequencing the merges.
microsoft/waza
Shared collaboration rules for a team of squad agents covering worktree awareness, writing decisions to an inbox, cross-agent requests and reviewer lockout.
vlinx-io/VelaTerm
Explicitly spawn a standalone child session under the current vlx-term session, passing the task in as its first message (mirrors spawntask).
stacklok/toolhive-studio
Spin up and interact with ToolHive Studio's containerized dev environment (Xvfb + noVNC + DinD).
awebai/aweb
Recognizes old aweb bootstrap-era `agents/` directories and migrates them to current team and identity primitives, since the old command family is retired.
awebai/aweb
Guides decisions for agents working in an aweb team: when to check shared state, claim tasks, take locks, read team roles and instructions, and open separate worktrees.
awebai/aweb
Guides how an agent reads and responds to aweb mail and chat events, choosing between asynchronous mail and synchronous chat and respecting sender verification and encryption boundaries.
awebai/aweb
This skill should be used when joining or being added to an aweb team, picking the correct invite/add-member path for the team's authority model (hosted vs BYOT), accepting invites, fetching team…

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add awebai/aweb --skill spawn-instance -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/spawn-instance, .gemini/skills/spawn-instance, .github/skills/spawn-instance and .opencode/skills/spawn-instance in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Spawn Instance needs the command-line tools its instructions call (git and claude) and credentials named AWEB_API_KEY. Our summary lists: A credential in AWEB_API_KEY.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Spawn Instance is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 725 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.9k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
