At a glance

Entry point for designing EVE-NG network labs: classifies the request, gathers missing requirements, proposes options and validates the resulting topology.

  • Works in 7 steps: Classify the request: campus,… → If requirements are incomplete, read… → Summarize requirements and assumptions… → …
  • Planning a new EVE-NG lab before building it
  • SKILL.md covers Core workflow, Guardrails, When to read references and Failure Behavior
  • Runs Python scripts from its folder

What it does

This skill is the starting point for EVE-NG topology work. It classifies the request as campus, branch or WAN, ISP or service provider, data center or hybrid, reads a discovery reference to ask only for missing requirements, summarizes requirements and assumptions, presents options with trade-offs and recommends one design. The design is delivered as both a physical topology and a logical or protocol topology.

Before a design counts as complete, it runs the QA structure from the validation reference, and any `.unl` file that exists or gets built is checked with `scripts/validate_unl_topology.py`. Guardrails: no building or configuring while requirements are vague, work at the physical, logical and lab-platform layers, state assumptions, add protocols only when requested, chosen or labeled as assumptions, and match icons to device roles. On tool errors it reports them instead of guessing, and it checks state before retrying anything that changes state.

When your agent uses it

  • Planning a new EVE-NG lab before building it
  • Reviewing an EVE-NG topology design or lab architecture
  • Producing a build plan for a lab with structured requirements and validation

Example prompts

  • “Design an EVE-NG lab for a two-site branch WAN with redundant uplinks.”
  • “Review this lab topology and check the .unl file against the validator.”
  • “I need a build plan for a data center lab; ask me what is missing first.”

Requirements

  • An EVE-NG environment for building labs
  • Python 3 to run the .unl topology validator

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Classify the request: campus, branch/WAN, ISP/SP, data center, or hybrid.
  2. If requirements are incomplete, read {baseDir}/references/discovery-workflow.md and gather only the missing details.
  3. Summarize requirements and assumptions before proposing a design.
  4. Present relevant options and trade-offs; recommend one design.
  5. Produce both the physical topology and the logical/protocol topology.
  6. Before calling the design complete, read {baseDir}/references/validation-workflow.md and run the required QA structure.
  7. If a .unl exists or is built, validate it with {baseDir}/scripts/validate_unl_topology.py and the notes in…

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit f943637. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

EVE-NG Lab Topology Design loads about 612 tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.5k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 71 tokens; SKILL.md has 274 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~71
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~612
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.5k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Design EVE-NG lab topology and coordinate the design workflow. Use when the user asks for lab design, architecture advice, topology planning, design review, or a build plan, especially when requirements, trade-offs, or validation need to be structured first.

EVE Lab Topology Design

Use this skill as the entrypoint for EVE-NG topology design work.

Core workflow

  7. If a .unl exists or is built, validate it with {baseDir}/scripts/validate_unl_topology.py and the notes in {baseDir}/references/unl-validator.md.

Guardrails

  • Never jump into build or config when requirements are vague.
  • Work at three layers every time: physical topology, logical/protocol topology, and lab/platform capability.
  • State assumptions explicitly.
  • Do not include protocols or services unless requested, chosen, or clearly labeled as assumptions.
  • Match icons and platform choices to the actual device role.

When to read references

  • Read {baseDir}/references/discovery-workflow.md for question flow, defaults, design options, domain guidance, and image selection.
  • Read {baseDir}/references/validation-workflow.md for output sections, QA gates, build-plan rules, and topology checks.
  • Read {baseDir}/references/unl-validator.md when you need validator usage, expected outputs, or requirements-file schema.

Failure Behavior

  • On a tool error (timeout, unreachable host, malformed response), report the failure and its error message directly to the user rather than fabricating or guessing at results.
  • For a confirmed read-only call, check connectivity and retry once if appropriate. For any call that changes state or sends a message, a timeout does not prove the action failed: inspect current state or delivery status before retrying, preserve the required approval/change gates, and do not repeat an action whose outcome is unknown.
