What it does

Data Flow is an agent skill from athola/claude-night-market. Generates a Mermaid sequence diagram showing how data moves between components. Use when tracing request flows or documenting data transformation pipelines.

Its SKILL.md is about 790 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Diagrams and Data cleaning. It works with Mermaid and Model Context Protocol. The repository describes itself as: 23 Claude Code plugins: TDD enforcement hooks, git/PR workflows, spec-driven development, code review, project lifecycle, fix-from-error, maintenance automation, context… The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tracing request flows
  • Documenting data transformation pipelines

Example prompts

  • “Use the data-flow skill to generate a Mermaid sequence diagram showing how data moves between components”
  • “/data-flow”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Explore the Codebase
  2. Generate Mermaid Syntax
  3. Render via MCP
  4. Present Results

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9f3eb00. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are mermaid).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Data Flow loads about 793 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 42 tokens; SKILL.md has 258 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~42
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~793

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Data Flow Diagram

Generate a Mermaid sequence diagram showing how data moves between components in a codebase.

When To Use

  • Tracing how a request flows through the system
  • Understanding data transformation pipelines
  • Documenting API call chains
  • Answering "what happens when X is called?"

When NOT To Use

  • Static call structure (use cartograph:call-chain)
  • Process steps and state transitions (use cartograph:workflow-diagram)

Workflow

Step 1: Explore the Codebase

Dispatch the codebase explorer agent:

Agent(cartograph:codebase-explorer)
Prompt: Explore [scope] and return a structural model.
Focus on function calls, data transformations, and
inter-module communication for a data flow diagram.
Step 2: Generate Mermaid Syntax

Transform the structural model into a Mermaid sequence diagram.

Rules for data flow diagrams:

  • Use sequenceDiagram for request/response flows
  • Participants are modules or components (not functions)
  • Arrows show data direction: ->> for calls, -->> for returns
  • Use activate/deactivate for long-running operations
  • Add Note over for data transformations
  • Limit to 8-10 participants maximum
  • Use alt/else for conditional flows
  • Handle circular calls by showing them once with a note

Example output:

mermaid
sequenceDiagram
    participant User
    participant Command as /commit
    participant Sanctum as sanctum.commit
    participant Leyline as leyline.git_platform
    participant Git

    User->>Command: /commit
    Command->>Sanctum: generate_message()
    Sanctum->>Leyline: get_staged_changes()
    Leyline->>Git: git diff --cached
    Git-->>Leyline: diff output
    Leyline-->>Sanctum: structured changes
    Note over Sanctum: Classify change type
    Sanctum-->>Command: commit message
    Command->>Git: git commit -m "..."
Step 3: Render via MCP

Call the Mermaid Chart MCP to render:

mcp__claude_ai_Mermaid_Chart__validate_and_render_mermaid_diagram
  prompt: "Data flow diagram of [scope/feature]"
  mermaidCode: [generated syntax]
  diagramType: "sequenceDiagram"
  clientName: "claude-code"

If rendering fails, fix syntax and retry (max 2 retries).

Step 4: Present Results

Show the rendered diagram with a brief description of the flow depicted (2-3 sentences).

Exit Criteria

  • Mermaid sequenceDiagram syntax generated with participants and at least one ->> call arrow
  • mcp__claude_ai_Mermaid_Chart__validate_and_render_mermaid_diagram called with diagramType: "sequenceDiagram" and returns without error (or retry attempted on first failure)
  • Participant count is at most 10; if more components exist, they are aggregated and the aggregation noted
  • A 2-3 sentence description of the depicted flow is shown alongside the rendered diagram
  • Return arrows (-->>) are present for any request that has a corresponding response in the traced flow

Can I use Data Flow in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add athola/claude-night-market --skill data-flow -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/data-flow, .gemini/skills/data-flow, .github/skills/data-flow and .opencode/skills/data-flow in your project.

What does Data Flow need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Data Flow is instructions for the agent only.

Does Data Flow access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Data Flow safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Data Flow use?

Data Flow is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Data Flow use?

About 793 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Data Flow?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Data Flow: Excalidraw Skill (yctimlin/mcp_excalidraw, 2.5k stars), GitDiagram Repository Overview (ahmedkhaleel2004/gitdiagram, 18k stars), Drawio (bahayonghang/drawio-skills, 286 stars) and Mermaid Diagrams (veelenga/claude-mermaid, 214 stars).
