What it does

Agent Deck is an agent skill from asheshgoplani/agent-deck. agent-deck, the terminal session manager for AI coding agents. Use when the user mentions "agent-deck", "session", "sub-agent", "MCP attach", or "git worktree", or needs to create, start, message, read, fork, restart, or supervise agent-deck sessions; launch child sessions or consult another CLI through agent-deck; attach MCPs to a session; manage groups, profiles, accounts, or worktree sessions; set up conductors or watchers; configure config.toml; or troubleshoot agent-deck. Not for in-conversation subagents…

Its SKILL.md is about 1.7k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 44 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `evals/RUNNER.md`, `evals/evals.json` and `references/autonomy.md`).

It sits in Agent Workflows, covering Git worktrees, MCP servers and Subagents. It works with Model Context Protocol, tmux and Git. The repository describes itself as: Terminal session manager for AI coding agents. One TUI for Claude, Gemini, OpenCode, Codex, and more. The licence is MIT.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 34cf369. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/, which the agent can run.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Agent Deck loads about 1.7k tokens when it runs, and up to ~96k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 141 tokens; SKILL.md has 653 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~141
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.7k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~96k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Agent Deck

Run agent-deck --version for your installed version. This skill targets v1.16.11+; most patterns work back to v1.7. See Backward Compatibility for what needs ≥1.16.11.

Scripts

Helper scripts live in this skill's scripts/ folder. Resolve them from the base directory shown when the skill loaded, not from the user's project:

bash
SKILL_DIR="/path/shown/in/base-directory-line"
$SKILL_DIR/scripts/launch-subagent.sh "Title" "Prompt" --wait

Plugin installs resolve to ~/.claude/plugins/cache/agent-deck/agent-deck/<hash>/skills/agent-deck/; a repo checkout resolves to <repo>/skills/agent-deck/.

Rules

  1. Flags before arguments: session start -m "Hello" name, not name -m "Hello". A flag that seems ignored is almost always in the wrong position.
  2. MCPs on request only: attach one when the user asks, then session restart it; attaching alone does not load it. --global writes Claude's config for every project; the default writes the session's .mcp.json.
  3. Leave other sessions to work: read another session with a single session output or session children call rather than a polling loop, which can interfere with the target.
  4. State only the task in a child's prompt. Every session agent-deck launches already carries its identity (session id, title, parent, core commands, completion sentinel; $AGENTDECK_IDENTITY_FILE for custom --cmd), so a prompt need not explain who the child is or how to reach its parent. Opt out with --no-identity or [launch] inject_identity = false; gemini also needs its identity folder trusted (documentation/HARNESS_IDENTITY.md).

Configuration

$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/agent-deck/config.toml (default ~/.config/agent-deck/config.toml; legacy ~/.agent-deck/config.toml still honored). Every option is in config-reference.md.

What does Agent Deck need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Agent Deck is instructions for the agent only. Our summary lists: Docker.

Does Agent Deck access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Agent Deck safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.
