What it does

Commit Conventions is an agent skill from areal-project/AReaL. AReaL commit message conventions. MUST load on every git commit -- provides Conventional Commits format with scope inference from file paths.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.6k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Commit messages. The repository describes itself as: The RL Bridge for LLM-based Agent Applications. Made Simple & Flexible. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Commit messages

Example prompts

  • “/commit-conventions”

Workflow steps

2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Add the file path pattern and scope to the "Scope Inference" table
  2. Keep table sorted by areal/ subpackages first, then top-level dirs

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit a642540. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Commit Conventions loads about 1.6k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 40 tokens; SKILL.md has 216 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~40
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.6k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Commit Conventions

Commit message conventions and scope inference rules for the AReaL repository.

When to Use

ALWAYS load this skill when making any git commit in AReaL. This includes:

  • Direct commits (git commit)
  • Commits during PR creation ($create-pr / /create-pr)
  • Commits delegated to sub-agents with this skill loaded
  • Any agent workflow that produces a commit

Commit Message Format

<type>(<scope>): <subject>

[Optional sections:]
Key changes:
- change 1
- change 2

Refs: #123, #456

Scope Inference

Infer scope from the primary changed file paths:

Rules

  • Subject: imperative mood, ~50-72 chars, no trailing period
  • Body: explain "why" not "what", wrap at 72 chars
  • Key changes: bullet list of main modifications (for complex commits with 3+ files)
  • Refs: reference issues/PRs if applicable

Examples

Single file fix:

fix(reward): handle empty completion in gsm8k

Return 0 reward instead of raising exception when
completion string is empty after extraction.

Multi-file feature:

feat(engine): add CPU offload support to ArchonEngine

Enable torch_memory_saver for model offloading during
rollout phase to reduce GPU memory pressure.

Key changes:
- Add offload/onload methods to ArchonEngine
- Integrate with weight update flow
- Handle ROCm compatibility

Docs only:

docs: update algorithm comparison table

Add SAPO and GSPO to the algorithm family documentation
with configuration examples.

Agent/tooling changes:

chore(agents): port review-pr command to OpenCode

Add OpenCode-native commands with task() category
delegation instead of hardcoded model names.

Key changes:
- Create .opencode/command/ with review-pr, create-pr
- Replace hardcoded model routing with platform-native review routing
- Add expert subagent consultation patterns

Governance/maintainer changes:

gov(agents): add maintainer ownership for service modules

Update CODEOWNERS and maintainer references to reflect
current governance responsibilities.

Key changes:
- Add maintainers for agent_service and infra ownership
- Align governance docs with updated reviewer responsibilities

Invocation: Automatically loaded on every git commit (all platforms)

## Purpose

Provides Conventional Commits format with AReaL-specific scope inference
from file paths. Unlike other skills, this one is NOT user-triggered --
it is loaded by the system/agent on every commit operation.

## How to Update

### When New Modules Are Added
1. Add the file path pattern and scope to the "Scope Inference" table
2. Keep table sorted by areal/ subpackages first, then top-level dirs

### When Commit Types Change
1. Update the "Type Selection" table
2. Add/update examples to illustrate the new type

### When Adding Examples
1. Each example should demonstrate a distinct commit pattern
2. Keep examples realistic -- use actual AReaL module names
3. Show both subject-only and subject+body+key-changes variants

### Important Design Decisions
- This skill is ALWAYS loaded (not optional) -- keep it concise to
minimize token overhead on every commit
- Scope inference is path-based, not content-based -- simpler and
  more deterministic
- "Multiple areas" -> omit scope rather than invent a new one
