7-powers-analysisAnalyzes a business, product or feature with Hamilton Helmer's 7 Powers framework to judge competitive advantage and how long it will last.
The skill applies Hamilton Helmer's 7 Powers framework to judge whether a company, product line or feature has durable competitive advantages. The agent first clarifies the subject, asking you if it is ambiguous, then scans all seven Powers: scale economies, network economies, counter-positioning, switching costs, branding, cornered resource and process power. For each it records whether the Power is present, its strength (none, weak, moderate or strong) and its durability (fragile, moderate or durable).
It then looks for Powers that reinforce each other, such as scale economies combined with network effects, and recommends actions to strengthen, develop or defend them. The output follows a markdown template that starts with an executive summary. The analysis can be adapted: for a feature decision it focuses on reinforcing, expanding and defending Powers, for threat assessment on competitors' Powers, and for early-stage companies on Power potential along the path from potential to realization to persistent returns. Definitions live in references/framework.md.
5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 51838c2. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
7 Powers Analysis loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.7k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 75 tokens; SKILL.md has 309 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Without a licence we can't republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 309 words (~1,065 tokens).
“Apply Hamilton Helmer's 7 Powers framework to evaluate whether a business, product, or feature possesses durable competitive advantages ("Powers") that enable persistent differential returns.”

The agent first clarifies the subject, asking you if it is ambiguous, then scans all seven Powers: scale economies, network economies, counter-positioning, switching costs, branding, cornered resource and process power.
7 Powers Analysis fits situations like: assessing whether a company has a defensible competitive moat; checking whether a new feature strengthens or weakens existing advantages; judging how competitors' advantages threaten your product; evaluating an early-stage company's potential Powers.
Run `npx skills add amplitude/builder-skills --skill 7-powers-analysis -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (product-skills/skills/7-powers in amplitude/builder-skills) into .claude/skills/7-powers-analysis in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add amplitude/builder-skills --skill 7-powers-analysis -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (product-skills/skills/7-powers in amplitude/builder-skills) into .agents/skills/7-powers-analysis in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add amplitude/builder-skills --skill 7-powers-analysis -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/7-powers-analysis, .gemini/skills/7-powers-analysis, .github/skills/7-powers-analysis and .opencode/skills/7-powers-analysis in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: 7 Powers Analysis is instructions for the agent only.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
No licence was found for 7 Powers Analysis or its repository. Without one, default copyright applies: ask the author before reusing or redistributing it.
About 1.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.3k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 1.6k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
