What it does

Linting Shell Scripts is an agent skill from agntcy/coffeeAgntcy. Runs task shell:lint (shellcheck + shfmt) against every shell script in the repo and fixes what it reports. Use when writing or editing a .sh/.bash file, before finishing such a change, or when asked to lint or format shell scripts.

Its SKILL.md is about 550 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Shell scripting and Linting and formatting. It works with Bash. The repository describes itself as: End-to-end reference application for AGNTCY Components. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Editing a .sh/.bash file
  • Before finishing such a change
  • Format shell scripts

Example prompts

  • “/linting-shell-scripts”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 36f1923. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Linting Shell Scripts loads about 548 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 64 tokens; SKILL.md has 147 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~64
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~548

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Linting shell scripts

What this skill does

Runs task shell:lint (defined in Taskfile.yaml, wrapping scripts/lint/lint_shell.bash) to check every shell script in the repo with shellcheck and shfmt, then fixes whatever it reports. This is the same check task check:all runs as part of checks.yaml. See .agents/rules/quality/shell-script-linting.md for the underlying rule.

Workflow

- [ ] 1. If shellcheck/shfmt aren't already available, run: task setup &&
source scripts/env.sh (bootstraps both into .tools/bin/, pinned to
scripts/lib/versions.sh - no global install needed)
- [ ] 2. Run: task shell:lint
- [ ] 3. For each shellcheck finding, fix the underlying issue (don't
silence with a directive unless the flagged pattern is
        intentional - then use `# shellcheck disable=SCxxxx` with a
comment on why, next to the line it applies to)
- [ ] 4. For shfmt diffs, run: task shell:fmt (rewrites in place), or fix
by hand if only a couple of files changed
- [ ] 5. Re-run task shell:lint to confirm it's clean

Notes

  • task shell:fmt only fixes formatting - it never touches a shellcheck finding, so step 3 still needs doing even after running it.
  • shfmt is pinned to -i 4 -ci (4-space indent, indented switch-case bodies) for this repo - don't reach for a different width or tab indentation even if a script predates the convention.
  • A script that must do something shellcheck flags on purpose (e.g. an intentionally unquoted glob expansion) should suppress that one check with an inline # shellcheck disable=SCxxxx directive and a comment explaining why, rather than leaving the finding unresolved or disabling the check repo-wide.
