analysis-tsharkGuides authorized packet capture and analysis with TShark, Wireshark's command-line tool, for security investigations, malware detection and forensic examination of network traffic.
The skill covers authorized security operations with TShark, including traffic analysis, malware detection, artifact extraction and forensic examination. It warns that captures can expose sensitive information and may only be made with proper authorization and legal compliance. Its checklist has eight steps: verify authorization, identify the interface and requirements, capture with filters, analyze packets for security indicators, extract artifacts such as files, credentials and sessions, document findings, store capture files securely and clean up sensitive data under the retention policy.
The first step calls for written authorization, a check of wiretapping and privacy law, data handling and retention rules, a documented capture scope of interfaces, duration and filters, and secure storage. After that come interface discovery with `tshark -D`, basic capture with count, duration, file output and ring buffer options, and BPF capture filters. The folder bundles a workflow checklist, an example, a CI config template and a rule template, and the excerpt is cut off in the filter section.
10 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6e25a4b. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

TShark Traffic Analysis loads about 4.8k tokens when it runs, and up to ~11k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 140 tokens; SKILL.md has 697 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 697 words (~4,772 tokens).
“TShark is the command-line network protocol analyzer from the Wireshark project. It provides powerful packet capture and analysis capabilities for security investigations, forensic analysis, and network troubleshooting. SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: TShark Traffic Analysis is instructions for the agent only. Our summary lists: TShark from Wireshark; Written authorization to capture the traffic; Elevated privileges for live capture.
SKILL.md names 5 domains. As links in the text: wireshark.org, wiki.wireshark.org, attack.mitre.org, csrc.nist.gov and nostarch.com. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (runs commands with sudo), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
TShark Traffic Analysis has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 4.8k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 19k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 6k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
