What it does

MCP Inspector is an agent skill from adeze/raindrop-mcp. MCP Protocol Inspection and Debugging with Inspector CLI

Its SKILL.md is about 420 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Debugging

Example prompts

  • “/mcp-inspector”

Requirements

  • Node.js

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 5b1e7f9. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • npx
    • bun

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • github.com
    • modelcontextprotocol.io

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

MCP Inspector loads about 421 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 18 tokens; SKILL.md has 149 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~18
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~421

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

MCP Inspector Skill

Guidelines for using the MCP Inspector tool in CLI mode for protocol inspection, debugging, and tool listing in a VS Code environment.

Prerequisites

  • Ensure you have Node.js and npx installed.
  • Install MCP Inspector: npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/inspector --help
  • Build your MCP server (e.g., bun run build or equivalent).

Usage Examples

List Available Tools

Run the following command in your VS Code terminal:

bash
npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/inspector --cli node build/index.js --method tools/list
Send a Protocol Request (e.g., ping)
bash
npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/inspector --cli node build/index.js --method ping
Debugging and Inspection
  • Use Inspector CLI to wrap your MCP server and inspect protocol traffic.
  • Example for STDIO server:
bash
npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/inspector node build/index.js
  • For HTTP server:
bash
npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/inspector node build/server.js

Tips

  • Use Inspector CLI flags for advanced filtering, logging, and output formatting. See Inspector documentation for details.
  • Integrate Inspector CLI commands into your VS Code tasks or launch configurations for automated inspection and debugging.
  • Use Vitest or your preferred test runner to automate CLI checks (see tests/inspector.test.ts for examples).
