What it does

Testing is an agent skill from AArnott/Library.Template. Provides guidance and instructions for writing, running and filtering tests.

Its SKILL.md is about 660 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It works with .NET. The repository describes itself as: A template for a NuGet package with tests, static analysis, code style, versioning, Azure Pipelines and GitHub Actions builds ready to go. The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “Use the testing skill to provide guidance and instructions for writing, running and filtering tests”
  • “/testing”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit a6034b5. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • dotnet

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Testing loads about 656 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 21 tokens; SKILL.md has 266 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~21
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~656

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

IMPORTANT: This repository uses TUnit with Microsoft.Testing.Platform (MTP v2). Traditional --filter syntax does NOT work. Use the options below instead.

  • There should generally be one test project (under the test directory) per shipping project (under the src directory). Test projects are named after the project being tested with a .Tests suffix.
  • Tests use TUnit with Microsoft.Testing.Platform (MTP v2), while retaining xUnit assertions. Traditional VSTest --filter syntax does NOT work.

Running Tests

There may be unstable tests that are attributed as such. Running the dotnet-test-cloud.ps1 script will execute all previously built tests except the unstable ones. The commands below will not automatically exclude unstable tests, but you may do so by adding a parameter to filter out those that set their TestCategory property to FailsInCloudTest.

Run all tests (from the root of the repository):

bash
dotnet test --no-build -c Release

To run a specific test project, change to that project's directory first; the commands below then target it without hard-coding its path.

Run tests for a specific test project (within that test project's directory):

bash
dotnet test --no-build -c Release

Run a single test method:

bash
dotnet test --no-build -c Release -- --treenode-filter "/*/*/ClassName/MethodName"

Run all tests in a test class:

bash
dotnet test --no-build -c Release -- --treenode-filter "/*/*/ClassName/*"

Run tests with wildcard matching (supports wildcards at beginning and/or end):

bash
dotnet test --no-build -c Release -- --treenode-filter "/*/*/*/*Pattern*"

Run tests with a specific property:

bash
dotnet test --no-build -c Release -- --treenode-filter "/*/*/*/*[PropertyName=value]"

Run tests for a specific framework only:

bash
dotnet test --no-build -c Release --framework net8.0

List all available tests without running them:

bash
dotnet run --no-build -c Release --framework net8.0 -- --list-tests

Key points about test filtering with TUnit / MTP v2:

  • Options after -- are passed to the test runner, not to dotnet test
  • Use --treenode-filter to select tests by assembly, namespace, class, method, or property
  • Traditional VSTest --filter expressions do NOT work
  • Wildcards * are supported in tree node segments
  • See --help for query filter language for advanced scenarios

Questions about Testing

What does Testing do?

Provides guidance and instructions for writing, running and filtering tests. Template. Provides guidance and instructions for writing, running and filtering tests.

How do I install Testing in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add AArnott/Library.Template --skill testing -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/testing in AArnott/Library.Template) into .claude/skills/testing in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Testing in Codex?

Run `npx skills add AArnott/Library.Template --skill testing -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/testing in AArnott/Library.Template) into .agents/skills/testing in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Testing in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add AArnott/Library.Template --skill testing -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/testing, .gemini/skills/testing, .github/skills/testing and .opencode/skills/testing in your project.

What does Testing need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Testing needs the command-line tools its instructions call (dotnet).

Does Testing access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Testing safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Testing use?

Testing is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Testing use?

About 656 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.6k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Testing?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Testing: Minimax DOCX (poco-ai/poco-claw, 1.4k stars), Microsoft Skill Creator (MicrosoftDocs/mcp, 1.9k stars), Speckit Constitution (WeihanLi/WeihanLi.Common, 242 stars) and Copilot Session Failure Analysis (dotnet/maui, 23k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Testing?

AArnott (a GitHub user) maintains it in AArnott/Library.Template, which has 150 GitHub stars. The repository was last updated on October 11, 2026.
