What it does

Prompt Authoring is an agent skill from a-streetcoder/agent-deck. Create or improve Agent Deck/Pi prompt templates for reusable parent-session workflows.

Its SKILL.md is about 720 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in AI & LLM Engineering, covering Prompt engineering. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Prompt engineering

Example prompts

  • “/prompt-authoring”

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Choose a short kebab-case filename/invocation.
  2. Decide whether the prompt needs arguments.
  3. Write concise frontmatter.
  4. Write a clear, self-contained prompt body.
  5. Save it to the requested prompt catalog/source location.
  6. Tell the user the invocation, file path, whether it expects arguments, and whether it still needs Default or Project assignment in Agent…

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9efbe6c. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Prompt Authoring loads about 721 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 26 tokens; SKILL.md has 282 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~26
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~721

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Create or improve Agent Deck/Pi prompt templates for reusable parent-session workflows.

Prompt authoring

Use this skill when the user wants a reusable slash prompt, workflow shortcut, or global/imported prompt template for parent Pi Agent sessions.

Runtime facts

  • Prompt templates are Markdown files that expand when the user types /name in a parent Pi session.
  • The filename is the invocation name: review-staged.md becomes /review-staged.
  • Prompt templates are user-message macros, not system prompts and not skills.
  • Agent Deck scans prompt templates into a catalog.
  • Agent Deck parent sessions launch with --no-prompt-templates and pass only assigned templates with explicit --prompt-template <path> flags.
  • Native subagents do not receive prompt templates.

Locations

Create reusable catalog prompts in Agent Deck's prompt library unless the user asks to keep an existing file elsewhere and import it by reference through Agent Deck’s + flow:

text
~/.pi/agent/prompt-library/<name>.md

Agent Deck no longer discovers project-local .pi/prompts or project settings prompts/package prompt sources as catalog resources. Global/default and project availability are Agent Deck assignments. Do not rely on ambient Pi prompt discovery. Import is by reference, not a copy.

Format

Use Markdown with optional frontmatter:

md
---
description: Short autocomplete description
argument-hint: "[optional-focus]"
---

Prompt body here.

Rules:

  • Keep the description short and user-facing.
  • Use argument-hint only when arguments are expected.
  • If no arguments are needed, omit argument-hint and do not include placeholders.
  • Make the body complete enough to be useful after expansion.
  • Avoid hidden, broad, or permanent behavioral instructions; templates are one-shot user prompts.

Arguments

Supported placeholders:

text
$1, $2, ... positional arguments
$@ all arguments joined
$ARGUMENTS all arguments joined
${@:N} arguments from N onward, 1-indexed
${@:N:L} L arguments starting at N

Examples:

md
---
description: Review a target with an optional focus
argument-hint: "<target> [focus]"
---

Review $1.

Focus on: ${@:2}

No-argument template:

md
---
description: Review staged git changes
---

Review the staged git changes with `git diff --cached`.

Focus on:
- bugs
- regressions
- missing tests

Authoring workflow

  1. Choose a short kebab-case filename/invocation.
  2. Decide whether the prompt needs arguments.
  3. Write concise frontmatter.
  4. Write a clear, self-contained prompt body.
  5. Save it to the requested prompt catalog/source location.
  6. Tell the user the invocation, file path, whether it expects arguments, and whether it still needs Default or Project assignment in Agent Deck.
